Monthly Snail Mail to Elder Rice

I'm not always gonna include these, but since we have been working harder than hard on the yard for the upcoming wedding, here is the part of the snail mail I send to Elder Rice...

I try to take pics at the same time, but it is getting darker and darker each month.

The vine on to your right is a Korean melon. Elder Rice sent Dad some seeds.

The lower courtyard, trenched for watering system, filled with granite, wedding ready!

Flower bed...I kept the dyanthus from Elder Rice alive...all Summer!

For the wedding, I trimmed and picked up, and filled in dirt and hauled buckets and buckets and wheelbarrows of granite up this hill.

One evening, Kayty was sitting at the kitchen counter and kicked the cabinet. We could not tell if she just bruised it or there was something in there. She soaked it in Betadyn every evening. We applied mercuriclear and neosporin each day. It felt worse and worse and she could only wear slippers to work. Finally, I looked and thought she might have MRSA..it looked so awful. So, she soaked, and I picked...and out popped this piece of wood!

Progress of Phoenix Temple each month.

Elder Rice Mail 9-23 2012

Hey family,

So for the care package I remembered a couple things Tylenol and the
vacuum clothes bag things that you like shove clothes in and suck it
down. I need that for transfers, whenever I do because other elders
had them and I was so jealous. And the aspirin, Sister Furniss sent some
cause my headaches got really bad and I went to a doctor and they
said it was stress, so she sent me Tylenol and told some things I can do
to get rid of stress. But ya I needs headache medicine. and Jessica
was so awesome to get the ipod ready so fast! Yay! and ya i just realized
I have no way to charge it so I need a charge cable I think. and I can’t
use headphones, but I can get speakers here super cheap so I will just
buy some.

So all candy bars in Korea taste weird except one Hershey bars, and
I figured out why. All candy, except Hershey’s, is made in Korea, so
they have different stuff in em. But Hershey’s are made in America
and taste good haha. So I’m sad to say I bought a lot of them this week haha.

So things in
광양 are awesome. We had church yesterday and it was
My first Sunday. So I met the ward for the first time. And it was cool
because I could actually speak to the people. Not perfect but ya. And
one sister asked if I could play piano and I said no, I wish I could,
and she said dang I was hoping you could. (why didn’t I listen to the
Spirit years ago and learn agh) But ya I gave my
인사말씀  (introduction)
words and it was good. This ward has teachers, deacons, and priests
(these are the young men, ages 12-18 that prepare, bless, and pass the
weekly bread and water – the Sacrament. In Elder Rice’s last ward, there
were few young men, so he and his missionary companion blessed the
Sacrament each week.)So that was cool. I was in the congregation for the
first time haha.

On Saturday, we did a district 전도 street contacting
activity. We made a
ton of brownies and did a survey for our English
class. Normally, when we do surveys, people have no interest. But
Korean culture is awesome because they love brownies and they eat and
they fill it out. So cool. Last time they did it, they got 4
investigators from it, so I hope this works too. And when I ran out,
I talked to everyone I could about the gospel haha. I love 전도 so much!

So we have this goal to get 1 baptism this transfer so I made a sign
on the door that has 7 steps to it.

1. We need to be exactly obedient.
2. We need to talk to everyone we see
3. We need to contact all the people we are teaching everyday,
4. We need to pray for those people everyday
5. We need a really good companion study to prepare how to teach well
6  We need to be focused on the work all day
7 We need to have the faith that the Spirit can convert people.
ya li
love my sign.

We are going to the beach
today… super excited. So I may have to go
soon ya beach stuff yay.

So I love the Doctrine and Covenants (LDS book of scripture) and I
read a great scripture this week

Doctrine and Covenants 123:15 it says
"Let no man count
them as small things; for there is much which lieth in futurity,
pertaining to the saints which depends upon their things"
And I love this because I love the small and simple things. And I keep
Jessica’s family’s conversion story in my mind. Every time I give a Book
of Mormon away, I think ya this is small and simple but it’s worth it.
Just by smiling and saying hi to people, that is super small, but
we do it, because we don’t know the Lord’s plan in all things but
He has one. And we do the small things and we have no idea why. Then, maybe
Years later, it has a huge effect on someone. Like my trainer Lee Seung Yeob
said to me "Today we obey,
tomorrow we understand". We may feel like
we should do something, but think, “That’s dumb” or “It’s so simple, it
doesn’t matter”. DO IT. Like the talk by Elder Bednar, "Think about
it, then do it… anyways". Even the small things we do for ourselves,
Like missionaries that know me know I pray a lot, and I didn’t realize I
did till someone pointed it out, and I realized that prayer is a small
thing to some, but to me, it is my biggest strength and I frequently
refer to it.

Well I’ll get going. I love you all. Be safe. Take care of Jessica

btw Korean brownie mix tastes disgusting. ya can you send me a good,
simple recipe for brownies? Like not requiring 2 sticks of butter and 8

Grammy, Uncle Ethan, and Aunt Cameo Go to Vegas

Every Latter Day Saint ward Primary learns songs and lessons throughout the year, and then shares those songs in a Primary Program during Sacrament Meeting in September or October. Ethan and Cameo offered to take Papa and Grammy...but after Papa went to Mexicali, he came down with a cold, and couldn't go. Sad Face! Ethan and Cam still took me...so very glad. Lovely car...lovely company...and great time!

At Adam's first school football game

Uncle Ethan's Iphone kept the cheerleader busy!

They didn't have their uniforms yet...first game and all...Adam is in the light blue shirt , tan shorts, black shoes

After the game...we stopped to slide...

and then take a quick run through the water park...it was pretty warm !

Adam: waiting for the bucket...

...it's coming...

Soaked!

Just missed Grace!

Joshy made Grammy's hands soooooo pretty!

Mommy went to get Daddy and get pizza for Pizza Night...so, Uncle Ethan  kept the kids occupied.

No walls were harmed in the playing of this basketball game.

Reading with Adam before the movie...

We sent this pretty pic of Grace and Hannah in their new outfits. It made Papa feel sooo much better!
The Primary Program was so wonderful. The theme for this year was "Choose The Right" and they sang and spoke about the importance of making good choices. It's so wonderful for them to learn at such a young age that we are given the opportunity to choose, but we must be aware that choices have consequences, both good and bad. So many special moments, but nothing more spiritual and touching than hearing the children sing "If the Savior Stood Beside Me".

The words:
If the Savior stood beside me, would I do the things I do?
Would I think of His commandments and try harder to be true?
Would I follow His example? Would I live more righteously,
If I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

If the Savior stood beside me, would I say the things I say?
Would my words be true and kind if He were never far away?
Would I try to share the gospel? Would I speak more reverently
If I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

If the Savior stood beside me, would my thoughts be clean and pure?
Would His presence give me strength and hope, and courage to endure?
Would His counsel guide my actions? Would I choose more worthily
If I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

He is always near me, though I do not see Him there
And because He loves me dearly, I am in His watchful care
So I'll be the kind of person that I know I'd like to be
If I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me.

Here it is on YouTube:

It is truly heaven on earth to watch your sweet, beloved grandchildren singing this. And to sit by a sweet grandson who won't be old enough for Primary till January...giving Cam, and Ethan, and I...the "cheese touch" (from "Diary of A Wimpy Kid" - it's what we used to call "cooties" in the old days, though you cross your fingers for protection...a "CP" on your hand won't help you with this)

Ethan got us safely home, right in time for Elder Rice mail! Thank you Ethan and Cam...I couldn't have been there without you!!!

Trip to Mexicali

Dee's travel opportunities have decreased; so much can be accomplished online. However, there was a plant in Mexicali that needed to be assessed, so he and his tech lead traveled to Yuma, and then to Mexicali for a two day trip.

September Birthday Celebration

Summers are challenging, so we grouped August and September birthdays. We decided that we only party/cake for those that can be here, though the family away is always in our thoughts and hearts. This month, we celebrated Nano's August 29th birthday, and Kelsie's 5th birthday on September 2nd.

Kelsie's Hello Kitty! Birthday cake

Nano's cake was Snickerdoodle Cupcakes: a pre-wedding trial...they were delicious!

Enjoying Wade's pictures from a trip to New Mexico

Kelsie wanted to 'candle' her own cake

It used to be a fight to keep all of the Rice boys from lighting the candles, but now that there are fewer competitors, we have to ask...and ask...and ask.
