Elder Rice Transfers to Jeonju and travels to District Meeting in Daejeon October 31 2012

Elder Rice was made Assistant District leader in Jeonju and gets to go to meetings in Daejeon. Daejeon has a COSTCO! He was excited to go and get cheese and salsa and tortillas. I was rather worried... After all, we don't have kimchii or octopus at our Costco. But, evidently he did get cheese and salsa and made some 'interesting' breakfast burritos. He told us, in our Christmas phone call, that the Costco had a food court with pizza and hot dogs, though the hot dogs were awful. Ethan, comic that he is, asked if that was because they were made of actual dog meat!

 Quite the breakfast burrito...eh!

 This is his shopping cart: cheese, pace picante sauce, tortillas, and hot dogs, I think.

 In another picture, there was a huge bag of Krusteaz Pancake mix. I also mailed him maple extract to make his own syrup. There is a challenge to sending him too much "food". Transfers are every six weeks. That means they may have to pack up and move, and it is costly to pay to put food on the train to get to the next location they are assigned.

 I am truly not sure of what this breakfast burrito is made of, though I do see kimchii. It is packed full, just like he used to do at home, and then barely folded over.

Elder Rice Update October 15, 2012

Elder Rice mails a smart card to Jessica about every 6 months, and she brings it over to share with us. So, we get pics in batches. This batch was mailed the first week in January, 2013, and it covered October through Christmas.

 I am going to have to wait till 2014 to find out who these people are.

 This must be some taste treat. I mail him large bags of Ghiardelli dark chocolate chips every couple of months, and I did send him some peanut butter, abut I am not sure what the white stuff is, but it does look like a 'fluffer-nutter' doesn't it.

 This he found for 2 dollars a can. He was so excited! I did mail him some root beer extract for him to try his own.

 I know that Gwangyang is located near a bay of some sort. I assume this is some tributary off that bay.

Harvesting Korean Melon November 12, 2012

Elder Rice sent Dad eight seeds from Korea...a melon that is eaten quite often. Dad planted three, and grew vines that gave us 26 plants. We invited Jessica over to help us harvest and taste. They taste like a honeydew cucumber, and we found out that they are peeled and sliced like cucumber when the Koreans eat them. It was fun to have something that Elder Rice was eating too...(though he really is NOT a melon fan.)

Setting Up the Winter Village November 6, 2012

My Village takes a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG time to set up. So, I begin right after Halloween, and it stays up till sometime in January (as of the publishing of this, I have received an eviction notice from Kayty, so it comes down on Friday, January 18th). My mom comes out to help me unpack the boxes that are loaded in my entryway closet and in my hut. Lots of work, but it looks kinda nice...

Deem Hills Hike November 5, 2012

Dee and I have been hiking Deem Hills near our home a few times a week. After work, there was just enough time to hike one portion, three miles, but we were always wanting to try the whole six miles. So, Dee had the day off, and we took off. It. Was. Long. We should have taken water. Now, it was cool, so we didn't die or anything, but we surely haven't rushed back to try it again.

Catching Up the Blog

I am, again, catching up the blog. I have a new refurbished laptop so I am not on our home computer as much, therefore less access to my external hard drive with the photos. I am just going to date the event in the title, so 2012 posts will occur in 2013.

Christmas Light Running

Goal Number 1: update blog. Well, I will start for this morning, since I have lots of past, and lots of future! I ran this morning...at 5 am...in the dark. I just love running this time of year, and I am so thankful for the lovely people who leave their Christmas lights on all night! It makes each turn a treasure. They must think no one sees...but I do. I may even venture to wake up early tomorrow, since there will be no Christmas morning rush to the presents, and just see if everyone leaves their lovely decorations on.
