Nancy Ella Chancy and Theodore Thomas Doran Rice

This is from newspaper articles. The dates are included. The "Ella Rice" is your dad's Great Grandmother, Nancy Ella Chancy Rice, and the "Doran" is your dad's grandfather, Theodore Thomas Doran Rice. Dad said his grandfather always told him the family was bootlegging and he had shot someone. Now, the story is proven true.

Judge Lawliss Lets Culprits Leave City

Thinks Its Better than to Attempt Getting Fines

The question of who gets changes of venue from police court was not solved yesterday when a case was carried from Acting Magistrate Lawliss to Justice Gorman.  At an afternoon hearing, Justice Gorman reports, both sides agreed that he should try the case, and accordingly accepted the papers transmitted to him.

The case was one against Mrs. Ella Rice of 1209 ½ Belle street on a charge of selling liquor.  But at the hearing before Justice Gorman, City Attorney Liedel finally agreed that the charge be reduced to one of disorderly house, and through her attorney, William Wilson, Mrs. Rice then entered a plea of guilty and was fined $25.

Yesterday’s complaint against Mrs. Rice grew out of a police raid Monday night.  But there had been a previous raid last Saturday night and today Mrs. Rice was summoned back into police court on the case growing out of the first raid.  Acting Magistrate Lawliss finally agreed that the charge be withdrawn after an offer had been made that Mrs. Rice would leave town, and she was released.

There was similar action taken by the acting magistrate……(not related to Rice case)

PARTY ENDS IN SHOOTING, 2 WOUNDED

Two Men in Hospital, Ten in Jail After ‘Rough-House’

19 Released, 1 Held

Son of Mrs. Ella Rice Claims He Shot in Self-Defense

It was due to a baby being knocked off a table, police have been told that a “rough house”, raised in the apartment of Mrs. Ella Rice at 1209 Belle Street at 11:30 p.m. Saturday developed into a shooting affray in which two men were wounded.

The two men shot were Bart Bainbridge, of 802 Henry Street, whose windpipe was punctured, and
Fred Thiesen of 325 West Twelfth Street who was wounded in the leg between the knee and ankle.

Both were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where it was said that the condition of Bainbridge was regarded as serious, little (illegible) having been noted, but (illegible) would be taken home having expected to develop no complications.

Doran Rice Held
The bullet with which Thiesen was shot, one of .32 calibre, was found in his clothing after he reached the hospital, police say.  The bullet which his Bainbridge appeared to have entered at the “adam’s apple” and to have emerged from the neck a few inches away.  He could not talk other than a few whispers when police saw him immediately after the shooting.

Doran Rice, barber at Broadway and Laclede avenue in Sering place and a son of Mrs. Rice in whose apartment the trouble started, was held by the police for the shooting.

Nine other persons were taken into custody as participants or witnesses of the trouble, but after questioning were released on their own recognizance to appear at 5 p.m. today.

Rice’s Account
Doran Rice told a reporter today that he had gone to the home of mother after closing his barber shop to get some washing she had done for him.  With him were his wife, their 2-year-old daughter, Iona, and a friend, Mann Duggan, a heavyweight boxer formerly of Plainview.
While they were in his mother’s apartment, he said, a party of men burst in and started a rough house.   It began in an apparent spirit of “horseplay” on the part of the visitors, he said, but, after his baby daughter was knocked off the table, he remonstrated, and a fight began.

When one man produced a knife, Doran said, he went to a bedroom and got a revolver he knew his mother kept for protection, and with help of his friend, Duggan, drove the visitors out.

Rice Opens Fire
But a few minutes later, three men started back.  He heard someone say, “Let’s clean out the place – he won’t shoot.”  And when the trio advanced on him as he stood on the front porch, on showing his knife, he says he first retreated, then began to shoot.

His first shot wounded Thiesen in the leg, but the other two men kept coming, and he fired a second time, wounding Bainbridge in the throat.

The police report shows officers were called by some resident of the neighborhood at this juncture.  When the ambulance arrived Thiesen, his wound bleeding profusely, was seated in a chair in front of the house, while Bainbridge already had been started for the hospital in a car, accompanied by two companions. John Boomleaf (?) and Robert Paisley or Peasley.  Thiesen was taken to the hospital in the ambulance.

Returning, officers found Doran Rice, who had been named by the wounded men, and put him under arrest.  His .32 calibre revolver later was found near the rear of the house, to which point it is believed he retreated after firing the first shot.

Conflicting Reports
While Doran Rice told police that he was forced to shoot in defense of his family and his mother’s home, police had two counter reports as to start of the trouble.  One was that it grew out of a “party” at Mrs. Rice’s place, the other that the party had “horned into” the Rice place after leaving a neighborhood place, keyed up to seek trouble.

Chief of Police Fitzgerald said today that Mrs. Rice’s premises had been subject of two raids within the last two weeks, but that no beer or liquor was found.  Some months ago a raid there resulted in a charge under which she was fined.

Mrs. Rice was among those who went to Springfield last summer to appear before a grand jury in federal court, it is said, and it was common gossip that she went to air gossip against the police.

Doran Rice’s automobile was found Sunday in a ditch on East Eleventh street near Alton, having gone partially down an embankment.  Rice said today that after the shooting he started to take his family and Duggan home, but that they found Duggan’s overcoat had been forgotten and turned back to get it.

In the fog, he ran past the end of the pavement on Eleventh at Alton and ditched his car.  He returned to his mother’s apartment on foot and was taken into custody on arrival there.

Plead Not Guilty on Liquor Charge

Doran Rice, 28, a barber, indicted twice on charges of assault with intent to kill, as a result of an affray last December 13, at the home of his mother, Mrs. Ella Rice at 1209 Belle street was arraigned in City Court before Judge Yager today and entered please of not guilty.

Rice was also indicted jointly with Mrs. Ella Rice on a charge of violating the state prohibition law, and both he and his mother, who also was in court, entered please of not guilty.

Two men, Bart Bainbridge and Fred Theisen were wounded in the affray at the Belle street address last December, and the indictments against Rice on the assault charges come from this circumstance.

Assistant State’s Attorney Streeper appeared for the state at the arraignment.

Week of August 4 - 10. 2014

Monday - What a day! Dad left for Utah, which went pretty well, but it was crazy the rest of the day. Kayty was so kind to make sure she was off so she could greet Kaylee when she arrived...but on a Monday...it was too much different stuff for a little kid. Between trying to be careful not to rip stitches out and trying to get her into the swing of things, I was totally beat!

Meanwhile in Utah, plans for hotels changed, so Dee went and visited with Rollin and Sharynn and family on his only night near Riverton.

Tuesday - I started the day with a shortened hike and got a few things at the grocery store on my way home. Tuesdays are usually the best day of the week with Kaylee, and this was no exception. I kept things calm and cool so as not to rip out any stitches...She cooperated.

Meanwhile in Utah, Dee and friends relocated to Springville Utah. Here are the pics he sent home.

Wednesday - I started the day with a great hike. It was so nice in the morning today. I hiked with a flashlight at first, and then I saw the sun rise. I hurried home after a quick stop at the grocery store, and fought the slow computer for an hour to get the van listed on the KSL.com. The day was long but we got through it, and Kaylee was ready to head out when Mommy came. Evening was spent just dusting, cleaning, and resting.

Meawhile in Provo, Dee had great supplier visits, solved some problems, and attended a session at the Provo temple.

Thursday - I had an awesome hike, even with the phonecall from Dee questioning the amount of money in our checking account. Nothing like getting a call about money while you are coming down a mountain...All was fine and I readied for Kaylee. Thursday is her LEAST favorite day...and today was no exception. We had a nice visit from Nano, which helped her out a lot.
I got a phonecall from some very anxious Vegas grandkids, waiting for their Papa to come. After Daddy came to get Kaylee, I headed out and got some shopping done. These fresh, first of the season puppies jumped into my cart...

I had no control! After returning home, I cared for chickens, a dog, the laundry, the vacuum cleaner on the floors, and headed to bed.

Meanwhile, in Vegas...Dee visited Allison and Mike and family, read, swang, ate ice cream, and had a wonderful time! (Grammy was rather envious!!!)

Friday - I hiked, greeted Kaylee and we played. She was SO tired of indoors! I was tired of indoors too. It was a long week...Dee returned home around noon and set out to work after I made him a salad. Kaylee was glad someone else was here! She was also so glad when Mommy came and ran to the car as soon as she got here. Dee and I went to his favorite Chinese restaurant for dinner...for me, the food isn't great, but the company was.

Saturday - I ran and then we went to some yard sales. I got some pretty good playroom items and Dee found a few odds and ends. He worked in the yard and went out to lunch...at that same Chinese food place...with his mom,  and I worked most of the day to complete the last 40 Christmas ornaments. Done at 11 pm!

Sunday - It was a pretty good Sunday. We listened to a young man who is departing for a Church mission to the Dominican Republic. He was a bit on the complaining side from all the "trials" he has had to endure...but one of the great things of serving a mission is the fact that youth in the US learn what real trials are. Dee fought the computer and Family Search for awhile. We went to Mom's to try to fix the house and alarm troubles she was having...werent much help though.

That was pretty much it. I am still itching like crazy and that little stitched incision still has some bleeding. Good Grief! I can't work in the yard, brush the pool, exercise, or anything else...all for an inch superficial skin removal. Allison, Cameo and Amber had actual muscles and ligaments cut, organs rearranged, and I never heard a whimper. I worship at their feet!

William Allan Kew

My dad, William Allan Kew (known as Allan) was born August 6, 1932 in Geneva, Illinois, to William Arthur Kew and Etta Lucille Taylor.

His birth certificate states that his father was 42 years old and was an auditor for Westinghouse Electric Co. and his mother was a housewife. The mailing address at the time of his birth was 635 Hill Avenue, Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He had one sister, Muriel Lucille Kew (who Suzzy called Aunt Moo) who was about 17 years older than Allan.

He grew up in various areas of Illinois, including Carmi, and moved to Phoenix Arizona when he was a teenager.

He finished his high school years at Phoenix Union High School, graduating in 1951.

Allan was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict on January 12, 1953 and served two years in Italy, running the military service canteen.

When he returned to Phoenix, he completed his education at Arizona State College of Tempe, now known as Arizona State University, and graduated from there in May of 1958 with a Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Drafting and Design.

He first met Barbara (Nano) in June of 1955, when they were both working that Summer at the Industrial Commission of Arizona. They each thought the other was in a steady relationship, so they just talked to each other as coworkers. One day, Allan asked Barbara if she would be interested in going on a blind date. The "blind date" for Barbara was Allan himself. He took her to dinner at Macayo's Mexican Restaurant and then went to see the movie "I'll Never Stop Loving You." They dated often during the Summer,

Notice, Nathan, that Nano and my dad had matching outfits, made by Nano

and one day in August, Allan said to Barbara, "Will you marry me?" She said "yes". They became officially engaged on June 14, 1956 when they went out to eat at Sky Harbor Restaurant and he handed her the engagement ring right at the table. They were married exactly one year later. On their wedding day, Allan wanted Barbara to have the new watch he had purchased, However, since it was bad luck for the bride and groom to see eath other before the wedding, he took it to her neighbor's house across the street, and they delivered it to Barbara.
Pictured from left to right

After Allan's graduation, he was offered a position in the Advertising Department of Yellow Front stores, where he had been working as a stock boy during school. He helped create three ads that were published weekly in the newspaper. A few years later, he was asked to head this department. Later, he worked as a Field Representative, creating new Yellow Front stores in California, Washington, Idaho, New Mexico, and Texas.

After nearly three years of marriage, they became expectant parents, and Suzanne was born the afternoon of July 4, 1960. They wanted more children, but it was not to be, so they decided to adopt, and after many months of waiting, Scott Allan was born on May 20, 1964 and joined their home when he was two weeks old. They tried again and Sharynn Louise, born on July 6, 1966, joined their home ten days later. Allan took care of the children as babies just as if it was second nature to him, even though he hadn't been around children. He loved to have birthday parties and Easter egg hunts. He lofed haveing them dress up for Halloween and take them out for trick or treating. He just loved Christmas and would often go out on Christmas Eve to purchase more gifts after all the gifts were under the tree, thinking there just weren't enough.

Church was very meaningful for Allan and Barbara. In the early years of their marriage, they attended North Congregational Church (known as The Church of the Beatitudes), and later, The First Baptist Church. They were faily happy at both churches, but it seemed as though they were always searching for the real church. They talked with their neighbors, Sid and Rita Mitchell, because they knew they were Mormon and were interested in finding out about that church. They arranged for missioneraries to come to the Kew home, and the gospel was shared with them. Allan was baptized with Barbara on March 16, 1974. He always said it was one of the happiest days of his life. The family was sealed in the Mesa Arizona Temple on November 5, 1976.

All his life, Allan struggled with hypertension. At the age of 37, he suffered a stroke, which initially left him completely paralyzed on his left side. Remarkably, he was able to regain most of the strength back in his arm and leg and was able to return to work about three months later. In his 45th year of life, he was plagued with kidney disease and the many complications that high blood pressure can present, and he died after a series of prolonged hospitalizations on September 4, 1977.

One of Allan's favorite dishes was one his mother made for him: meatballs with mushroom soup over white rice. He also loved browned pork chops baked with saurkraut on top, with applesauce on the side. He loved snacking, favoring pretzel sticks, sugared orange slices and Three Musketeers candy bars. He never was a fan of vegetables, though he would eat corn, green beans and peas. His favorite dessert was Germann Chocolate cake. In his later years, he so enjoyed going out to dinner at a nearby Mexican restaurant: El Tango.

Allan loved to create things with his hands. He loved building models, both of his architectural plans as well as automobiles. He was an expert with ceramics in high school and always enjoyed making something, whether cuff links from marbles to doll houses, complete with elevator. He also loved purchasing cars, fixing them up, and selling them. Not a restoration, but a repair. He loved Frank Loyd Wright architecture and driving out to Arizona State University to admire Grady Gammage Auditorium.

I remember that my dad went to everything. He was their for choir performances, band concerts and sat on a ball field watching two and sometimes three games at once. He was there for plays and football games. I never ever did anything that my dad and mom didn't attend.

Happy Birthday, Dad. This year you would have been 82!

Week of July 28 - August 3, 2014

Monday - It was a beautiful run that began my Monday. I raked and cleaned up pine needles and worked on the pool, and then got Dee and Kayty up and off to work.  Morning was filled with laundry and cleaning, with a bit of ornament painting on the side. Dad and I used his lunch break for a 99 Cent Store Vegetable run and a trip to a woodworking store for a drill bit. After lunch, I painted, and Kayty's best friend came by...

Yes, Dave Ross, our piano tuner. (Sorry it's blurry...I had to sneak since he was so busy and I didn't want to interrupt.

I painted and painted and cleaned and cleaned. Dad mowed the yard before dinner...

He blew more mesquite beans into piles for my future pick up... not so sure how I felt about that.

Tuesday - I ran to the temple and exercised, though I had to get Dad out the door to meetings by 6 am. I did my dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning, and then went and painted ornaments. 20 done, 20 begun. Dad needed a companion for home teaching, so I went with him, and then after we returned home, our home teacher and his wife came and we had a great visit!

Wednesday - I noticed after my run that the garbage cans had not been picked up by the truck yet. So, I grabbed my wheelbarrow and a few empty buckets and bins, and loaded mesquite beans and raked and raked and hauled and hauled to fill up my trash can. I got 9 buckets/bins and three wheelbarrow loads down! Then I spent the rest of the morning worrying that the trash wouldn't be collected because I didn't bag up the mess.

It did come!

I ground up some roast to make nice hamburgers for the missionaries, and after cleaning...and more painting...40 ornaments now complete.

We fed Elder Nokes and Elder Meredith...burgers, chips, salad, beans (no one ate those) and chocolate ice cream for dessert.

We headed to WalMart for stuff: oil for an oil change, Kelsie's birthday gift...we even got my palm tree trimming knife at Lowes.

Thursday - I ran and exercised and cleaned some, thinking I would do it later, and then headed to the dermatologist to remove more tissue on my back. I started getting nervous when I was given more and more shots of Novocaine. Cutting and cutting, stitches below the skin and 7 on top and I was ready to be done...till she said no bending or straining so I don't pull the stitches out.

Really?

I learned that absolutely everything I do is bending and straining and stretching. I went crazy just trying to figure things out the rest of the day...

And painted some more...60 ornaments total done.

And I fell sound asleep...totally...utterly...didn't even remember turning off the light.

Friday - I kept trying to wake up early, but my incision hurt so much that I just slept in till 6:10 am. I feel so much compassion on my c-section daughter and daughters in law. How did you do it? I just had a hunk of flesh removed...no muscle cut. I did sleep well, as long as I used no pillow and slept flat on my back.

My day was spent trying to be careful and find things that I could do...dusted a bit...vacuumed with the small vacuum...I even cheated and cleaned up my painting stuff so it wouldn't interfere with tending Kaylee next week. I also ground up the chicken breast I purchased yesterday...and almost ground up a plastic spoon. After MUCH effort, Dee finally got it out of the grinder...

Grinder is fine, thankfully. The spoon...

As the day went on, I could do less and less. It's amazing how removing a dime sized chunk from my back can be so irritating. We did finally get my new vacuum. Goodbye Kirby!

Later, we got a glorious rainstorm and lots of water! It was great!

Saturday - I woke up early and actually didn't hurt. I tried to jog, but ended up walking the three humid miles. It felt good to move! The worst part of all this is the beautiful weather...and all the yard work I cannot do! We hit some yard sales...

I completed Grace's baptism gift...

We picked up my photos at Walgreens and finally filled Sam's empty frame on my grandkid shelf. Now, to order an update for Kooper's photo.
I also got a pic of Nate and Jess in her wedding gown at the temple to complete, for now, the wedding shelf...
We voted and mailed our ballots
I took my daily shower (no baths or pool for two weeks!) and Dad put this all on my stitches...

I am rather concerned...Kayty gets to do this to me next week...

Dad trapped another squirrel ...number 21...to relocate at the waterfowl viewing center at Thunderbird Park

We grocery shopped and by this time, I was sore, so I put away groceries, cooked some dinner, and spent some time on the couch. Meanwhile, Dad noticed glorious cool weather outside.

I was so jealous because I tried to trim my palm tree...but no way with my limited pulling and twisting.

We had thunder and yet a third rainstorm! Hurray!

We went to look at upgrading our computer. I felt like Rip Van Winkle who had been asleep for 100 years! I knew NOTHING! I just couldn't wait to leave Best Buy!

Sunday - Another wonderful fast and testimony meeting! We have the most wonderful people in our ward and I am so grateful to be blessed to learn of their testimonies. We came home and Dad visited a family he home teaches while I indexed. This time it went well, and I do like indexing obituaries now. Dinner was salad...packing a suitcase...visiting with Kayty...watching videos of Nate peeling apples with a drill (Epic!)...and working on genealogy.

I got a lot done this week, though I do wish the dermatologist had warned me of my limitations due to the procedure. It has been tortuous for me to have such lovely weather that I cannot work outside in....or swim in. On the other hand, I got LOTS of ornaments done and should finish the job on my next week off. I was grateful that as we had barely planned a fast for our children, I could see the hand of the Lord already at work, so we were comforted in being reminded that He is aware of ALL their needs.

Week of July 21 - 27, 2014

Monday - Today was a day of many many blessings! Though I was texted from an outside family member at 3:48 AM, I was blessed to get some exercises AND a great run in...and it felt cooler than an oven outside! Kaylee was a little cross on arrival, but didn't take long to get into the swing of things and we had fun in both her little and the big pool. Dee took my jeep down to get an emissions test without the expensive repairs...and it passed!!! HUGE blessing! I received a call that angels are caring for my daughter and her family in Las Vegas...and have generously eased the financial burden they were facing. Since they wanted to be anonymous, I have expressed prayerful gratitude for kind and loving people, whether an "aunt" by blood...or by love. I was blessed to get some of my Tuesday work done on Monday night, and we were blessed with a wonderful letter from a wonderful grandson in the mail. Awesome day!

Tuesday - I jogged and exercised, got the sunflowers with seeds cut off

and in the garage to dry, and I pulled up the rest. No more watering, since the next two weeks are scorchingly hot. Pool was brushed and after Kaylee got here, we had a brief swim. My visiting teachers came for a great visit. Dee was busy at suppliers most of the day. After work, we realized he had pack meeting, so he left for Rio Vista Park and fishing...in molten heat. I cleaned, took a quick trip to Dollar Tree, and came home. The evening ended with a swim and bed.

Wednesday - I slept in a bit and exercised this morning. It was 95 degrees when I woke up, so I was glad I didn't plan on running. The day was typical, though Kaylee just didn't seem right. Nathan's job interviews went so well that both jobs wanted to hire him. He decided to take the closer, more long term job rather than the one that was more interesting to him. I learned Jessica has been feeling very poorly, and Nate's headaches have not let up. So sad. I just keep praying. It ended up being 114 degrees today...and it felt like every single degree. No outside work done.

Thursday - I tried to hike this morning...92 degrees at 4:45 am, but Thunderbird Park hadn't opened yet, and I had to get Dee and Kayty up, plus brush the pool, so I went back home and exercised. When brushing the pool, I broke the brush. Kaylee kept me very busy the whole day.And by the time Ethan came, Phoenix had recorded 116 degrees outside.  After Ethan and Kaylee headed home, we went to WalMart for bait and Winco for salad...I did get most of Jessica's stocking done - almost all the sequins are on.

Friday - It felt much cooler...only 90...when I went running. I again enjoyed the lower temple lights on. Such a treasure to run by a temple that will be operating soon. Kaylee didn't ask to swim today, so we spent the day indoors. We finally watched "A Charlie Brown Christmas".  Dee had a good mid-year review from his boss. Kaylee kept me hopping...I think we played with every single toy available to her in the playroom. Dee, Ethan and Doran met Scott, Jenny and a friend at Lake Pleasant to fish. Cam and Kaylee went home, Kayty headed to a Bachelorette Party, and I finished Jessica's stocking!

The guys didn't contact us, but since I knew there were two boats, I wasn't worried, so I headed to bed. The fishing was very good...and they got a good haul!

Maybe lightening???

Saturday - We headed out to a few yard sales...NBJ (Nothing But Junk!)...worked around the house, headed out for groceries, cleaned and had some ward friends for dinner - Dee's grilled chicken, mashed potatoes and salad...Dee had to study for a lesson he had to give the High Priest's Quorum on Sunday. I fell asleep...and slept through a massive wind and rain storm! We didn't suffer much damage...only lots of junk in the pool and lots of raking to do on Monday.

Sunday - It was gorgeous outside when I got up!!! I am glad we take Sunday as a day of rest and don't work...but this would have been a tempting morning! Church was great, as always...and we learned that when they dedicate the Phoenix Temple, we will be sent to another church building so they can use ours for staging the open house. We will attend the building near Dorrie's house, and attend at 1 pm rather than 9 am. Glad it's not further to drive. This building a mile away from us has me spoiled.

We ate lunch and headed to Doran and Ambers to return some stuff he left here.
I held a Kooper...

...and played Barbies with Kelsie.

I even snuggled Kooper to sleep (please pay no attention to the quiet child with eyes wide open.)
Kelsie took some pictures of her own...

We returned home, ate, visited with Nate and Allison on the phone, and I set up my sewing room for ornament production.

Please do not ask how one gets the laundry done, the vacuum out, or into the garage. It is way to complicated to even explain, but I can have 15 or more ornaments going, and next week will be a busy one.

Just a thought...for those of you who read this...many of our family members are going through struggles and after thought, Dad and I are going to fast on our next Fast Sunday for our family, that each one facing a challenge may be guided and directed to the solutions to those challenges. If you would like to participate, or even just to remember in your prayers, you are welcome to do so.
